Mahiyanganaya is a historic town in Sri Lanka’s Uva Province, known as one of the island’s most sacred Buddhist sites. It is believed to be the first place visited by the Buddha during his journey to Sri Lanka, where he preached to the native Yaksha tribes. The town is home to the Mahiyangana Raja Maha Vihara, an ancient stupa said to enshrine a lock of the Buddha’s hair. Nestled in a valley by the Mahaweli River and surrounded by lush mountains, Mahiyanganaya is also rich in indigenous Vedda culture and traditions, making it a place where history, spirituality, and nature come together.
